Years ago my hubby wanted me to wear this 62+ carat diamond necklace to lunch with my girlfriends! I thought my friends would think I was a show off, wanting to attract attention to myself. The necklace has long been gone, I regret caring too much what people might think of me, things come, things go, and I truly believe no one really “owns” anything; we are just caretakers for a time.
The photo you see I took, “She flaunted her expensive necklace.”
I love this quote……“Your regrets aren’t what you did, but what you didn’t do. So I take every opportunity.” Cameron Diaz
“The patent process for puffy shades is largely lost. Available still is the surface knowledge of acidification of the exterior of the blank shade that gives it the filmy, gauzy look. Women reverse painted the lamps, then the lamps were baked in a kiln. This made them very durable and strong and with thick shades to accommodate the puffiness. They were inexpensive to wholesalers at the time-thirteen dollars, whereas carriage trade retail customers could pay as much as one hundred twenty dollars to Tiffanys or Eatons, Canada-compared with those painted in house by the male artists, who painted on traditional, straighter line shades such as the Berkley or Carlisle.
“Shades of other companies’ lamps of the period, with some few exceptions like Handel, cold painted the inside of their shades. However, not baked, they flaked over the years and broke off. This distinguishes them from the Pairpoint puffy.”
Pereira’s prized Easter Bonnet/Rose Bonnet puffy lamp is, he claimed, “probably the third most valuable and desirable. By last count only a half dozen exist. The layered richness of the lamp lies in its depiction of not just flowers but butterflies and in a shape making it particularly spectacular.” Read the entire article at the Antique Digest… thank you!! http://www.maineantiquedigest.com/stories/?id=416
This is my favorite lamp, my son’s football got close to it a few times but it survived! Hey thanks for reading my blog!
a watch fob of gold-bearing quartz, mounted in gold;
When Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865, he was carrying two pairs of spectacles and a lens polisher, a pocketknife, a watch fob, a linen handkerchief, and a brown leather wallet containing a five-dollar Confederate note and nine newspaper clippings, including several favorable to the president and his policies. Given to his son Robert Todd upon Lincoln’s death, these everyday items, which through association with tragedy had become like relics, were kept in the Lincoln family for more than seventy years. They came to the Library in 1937 as part of the gift from Lincoln’s granddaughter, Mary Lincoln Isham,.

The Taj Mahal of Agra is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, for reasons more than just looking magnificent. It’s the history of Taj Mahal that adds a soul to its magnificence: a soul that is filled with love, loss, remorse, and love again. Because if it was not for love, the world would have been robbed of a fine example upon which people base their relationships. An example of how deeply a man loved his wife, that even after she remained but a memory, he made sure that this memory would never fade away. This man was the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who was head-over-heels in love with Mumtaz Mahal, his dear wife. She was a Muslim Persian princess (her name Arjumand Banu Begum before marriage) and he was the son of the Mughal Emperor Jehangir and grandson of Akbar the Great. It was at the age of 14 that he met Mumtaz and fell in love with her. Five years later in the year 1612, they got married.
Mumtaz Mahal, an inseparable companion of Shah Jahan, died in 1631, while giving birth to their 14th child. It was in the memory of his beloved wife that Shah Jahan built a magnificent monument as a tribute to her, which we today know as the “Taj Mahal”. The construction of Taj Mahal started in the year 1631. Masons, stonecutters, inlayers, carvers, painters, calligraphers, dome-builders and other artisans were requisitioned from the whole of the empire and also from Central Asia and Iran, and it took approximately 22 years to build what we see today……..read full story link below!
Dear Mr. Turlough McConnell,
I was delighted to find out our cabinet was actually an Irish Victorian Killarney marquetry Davenport, mid-19th century. It appears the thatched cottage on the top of the cabinet is Glena Cottage, where Queen Victoria visited and which also burnt down in 1916. On the side of the cabinet is an inlaid picture of a large mansion said to have been Killarney House, the residence of Earl of Kenmare where Queen Victoria was entertained in 1861. The sloping top, when raised, discloses six small drawers, and there is a secret drawer below. There is an inlaid picture of a harp, stag and eagle. Now, my interest has new meaning having just returned from a country with such history. I suppose my curiosity is beyond normal thinking and I tend to be a romanticist. I find the site Muckross- house library very insightful. How Interesting Queen Victoria’s visit coincides so much with all the scenes on our cabinet. I am excited to research this more to find out more of this historic time, as one of the articles says “Her Majesty being “very quiet” while at Muckross. A direct quote says “Great events make me quiet and calm; it’s only trifles that irritate my nerves.”
Ireland is so beautiful; I can only imagine how it was in 1861. I can picture myself, a day at Ross Castle,
Then set out for a day at the lakes on a stag hunt. The Muckross library says, “The Royal party was then escorted to Killarney House, where a large dinner was held that evening. The next day the Queen embarked at Ross Castle for a day on the lakes. Lunch was served at Glena Cottage”. Lord Castlerosse presented a similar cabinet to Queen Victoria on the occasion of her visit to Killarney in 1861. It is on display in the Boudoir at Muckross House courtesy of the National Museum of Ireland. It was lovely to meet you, Mr. McConnell, at the Hillsborough Castle! The ball was such an event, my camera mysteriously arrived with me in my handbag so I was able to capture a few memorable moments! The secretary of state even escorted me to the cloakroom for the ladies, as I had lost my way in the castle. Topping the evening ….. Meeting Mr. Ian Paisley!
Sincerely,
Valerie Fain
*Note I sent this to magazine editor Mr. Turlough McConnell in Ireland. Maybe if I was a better writer he would have responded….lol. I thought this should be front page news as I was beside myself discovering the scenes on the desk in my living room.
*Notes from Northern Ireland Investment Conference w/ OnlineAuction.com.
I wasn’t supposed to bring my camera….ooops! Greeted Ian Paisley, loved his testimony! He talked about being in prison and his beliefs in God. I got lost trying to find the “Cloak Room” Secretary of state showed me the way. Stayed in the famous Europa, 12 story hotel in Belfast. The most bombed hotel in Europe bombed 16 times. Went to Queens University founded by Queen Victoria, The Bush Mills Inn, Stormont Parliament for lunch, Transport museum conference.

The hotel is located in the old neoclassical railway station on Viale Monte Grappa, 12, that opened in 1840 for the Milan-Monza route. The hotel’s creative direction is led by Rossella Jardini and Moschino’s creative team. The exterior facades were restructured to be faithful to the original structure, while the interior was completely interpreted in the Moschino style. Divided into four floors, the 65 rooms and junior suites are all different. On the ground floor, the hall and the bar welcome guests into the hotel. The restaurant Clandestino Milano extends from the hall to the terrace, the brand new ART SPA and the gym are located on the lower levels. The common thread connecting the rooms is a fairy tale theme because to sleep is perchance to dream, and dreams are fairy tales that we are allowed to experience first hand, the fables of a fantasy world that we have created. This is an alternate life in which we direct and stage the scripts of our very own play. The hotel interior reflects Moschino’s distinctive style where the ordinary world is painted with a brush of surrealism.
This is the only place I could find these illuminated dress forms! OMG! Love them, have to have them!!
Nobody knows what you like better than you! I’m not a decorator just a regular gal who’s been collecting antiques and collectibles in her house for the last twenty-five years. I just purged those last 25 years of collecting and it feels good. I picked up ten decorating books at the thrift store a few days ago. I studied them for a few nights. It occurred to me, with all 10 books and a pair of scissors what great rooms we could master in just a few minutes.
Duesenberg became one of the most popular in America, owned by the rich and famous, among them Clark Gable, Gary Cooper (Each owning one of the two very rare SSJ 125″ short-wheelbase convertibles) and the Duke of Windsor. Duesenberg advertising claimed that it was the best car in the world, and their world-beating performance and extreme opulence tend to back that up. There was a gradual evolution up to the 1937 model, that preserved the “stately lines” while moving into a more integrated mode of styling. The final evolution of the Duesenberg engine were ram-air intakes added to some of the last supercharged models to produce 400 horsepower and are referred to as ‘SSJ’ (also a name never used by the factory). Of the 481 Model Js and SJs produced between 1928 and 1937, 384 are still extant, 4 of them now owned by Jay Leno. Duesenberg ceased
Model X Duesenbergs are very rare. According to Randy Ema, the country’s top Duesenberg authority, only 13 Model X’s were built. They fit in between the Duesenberg Model A and the famous Models J and SJ, which were built from 1929 to 1937. Only four known X’s survive.
On July 30, 1923, Duse became the first woman (and Italian) to be featured on the cover of the nascent Timemagazine
http://wikicars.org/en/Duesenbergproduction in 1937 after Cord’s financial empire collapsed.
I don’t know if I should care for a man who made life easy; I should want someone who made it interesting.
