In 1905, two classmates — Donald Herring, class of 1907, and Alec Scott, class of 1906 — organized the first known intercollegiate wrestling meets, pitting Princeton against Yale and Penn. These meets led to the formation of the Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (IWA), featuring the original three — the Tigers, Bulldogs and Quakers — as well as Columbia. http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/2005/03/03/12230/
D. G. Herring 1907 prepared for college at Lawrenceville and entered Princeton in the fall of 1903. That year he captained his Freshman football team, playing guard, but in his Sophomore year was prevented by injuries from playing regularly. In 1905 and 1906 he was a regular member of the University team, alternating between center and right tackle. Herring was also a member of the University wrestling team in the seasons oi 1905-1906 and 1906-1907, and in the intercollegiate meet of 1906 won the heavyweight championship. He is a member of the Senior Council by general election, and has always been prominently connected with the Philadelphian Society. Herring will enter upon residence in Oxford next fall
